The Final 11+ Countdown: Calm, Confident Preparation
As the Medway 11+ approaches, it is natural for children and parents to feel a mixture of excitement and nerves. The children have worked incredibly hard, and the final few days are a time to protect their confidence, revisit familiar skills and keep preparation manageable.
At B Wise Tutoring in Hempstead, Medway, my message to families is simple: keep this final stretch calm, focused and encouraging. Here are four reminders to help.
1. Practise little and often
Choose a short, focused activity with a clear purpose. That might be revisiting a familiar maths method, discussing a few vocabulary questions or practising a question type your child already knows.
Keep the amount manageable and leave time for breaks, play and normal family life. Finishing with something your child can do successfully can help them leave the session feeling positive.
2. Review mistakes and the thinking behind them
When you look through practice together, spend time on how your child approached a question. Did they miss a key word, rush a calculation or feel unsure which method to use?
Ask, “What could you try next time?” Talk through the approach, then try a similar example together. Keep the conversation supportive and recognise the things they are doing well.
3. Use familiar exam techniques
Remind your child to read each question carefully and, for multiple choice questions, rule out answers that clearly cannot be correct. This can make the remaining options easier to consider.
If a question feels difficult, encourage them to make their best choice and move on, following the instructions for that paper or section. They can return if time remains and the test instructions allow it. One difficult question does not define the whole paper.
If they are using a separate answer sheet, remind them to check that the answer they mark matches the correct question number, especially after moving past a question.
4. Keep everyday routines steady
Keep bedtime, meals and the daily routine as familiar as possible. Make space for things your child enjoys and keep conversations about the test reassuring.
Check the information provided by the school or test centre, including arrival arrangements and what your child needs to bring. Getting organised in advance can make the morning feel less rushed.
A final word of encouragement
Let your child know that you are proud of the effort they have put in. They do not need to find every question easy to keep going and do their best.
To all the children preparing for their 11+, well done for your hard work. Take it one question at a time and remember how much you have already learnt.
